Well, it’s another football season. The past few years, I’ve not been looking forward to it as much as I used to. I’m supposin I think too much about it, but I worry. I worry about the football players and concussions. There’s some real compelling research out there showing that multiple concussions may lead to a condition called, CTE, which stands for Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy. If you’re interested in reading more about that, check out the Concussion Legacy Foundation.
Now, I do not have sons, but if I did, I wouldn’t let them play football. It’s just too dangerous for young people’s brains. It’s also dangerous for growing and developing muscles and bones. So, here’s my dilemma: if I wouldn’t let my kids play football, then how can I watch other people’s kids play football? I know these athletes probably get scholarships to attend college, which is great, but then I think about how much these big power schools make off those athletes and they never see a real dime of that.
Football in the south is as important and loved as sweet tea. But, we have to be concerned about the health of those athletes.
